This past Saturday myself and 3 other guides from Wilderness Voyageurs had a 4 bloat float on the Middle Yough. This was the first time for all the clients to run down the middle at least to my knowledge. The water was a little cloudy even at a flow of 850 c.f.s. The rain that fell a few days earlier in the Tri-State area “PA,MD,WV” really made the river cloudy. The fishing was up and down for all boats throughout the float. I can only speak for my boat and my two mates, Whittey and Carlo had a slow start but finished the best way to buddies could.

Bugs were coming off the water all day but only saw a few rising fish. Slate Drakes, Caddis in the A.M, few Cahill’s, and Sulphur’s. The river was packed with canoes, kayaks, and rafts that may have put the fish down a little. Started off with nymphs and fished them pretty hard. We later changed it up to start throwing streamers. The fishing began to pick up when we made the switch. The photo below is a fish from Rob’s boat.

I was very surprised to see how many small mouth we brought to the boat. All were pretty small except for one. It’s getting that time of the year when the small mouth fishing is going to pick up on the lower Yough.

The day came to a great end when my guys got into a “Double”. Both fish fought really hard and the guys played them just right and we were able to net them both and get a few pictures.

Fishing has been better but with so much river activity and water clarity it was a little tough. A great group of guys on the water and a fun time. Hope to get back on the water soon as I think the middle Yough still has some great trout fishing to be had.

Glad you had a great float – but we missed you (and Yasmine!) at Beer & Gear!
I know next year no guiding during Beer & Gear. Sorry I missed you but looking forward to French Creek!
